Federal Court
The Federal Court has published a consultation on its 2020-2025 Strategic Plan and is seeking comments until September 13, 2019. The consultation asks what should be the Court’s priorities, including on digitization as well as a reflection on its previous strategic plan.

Janet Fuhrer of Ridout & Maybee was appointed a judge of the Federal Court. Judicial appointments were also made today in Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba.

Justice Peter Pamel and Justice Nicolas McHaffie were appointed to the Federal Court on May 6th – news release. Justice Pamel was a partner at BLG practicing primarily in the area of maritime law. Justice McHaffie was a partner at Stikemans focusing on intellectual property, public law and administrative/regulatory litigation.

Justice Locke of the Federal Court was elevated to the Federal Court of Appeal. Angela Furlanetto of DLA Piper was appointed a Prothonotary of the Federal Court. Justice Marianne Rivoalen was appointed to the Federal Court of Appeal today. She replaces Justice J.M. Woods, who elected to become a supernumerary judge effective April 1, 2018. Prior to today’s appointment she was Associate Chief Justice of Her Majesty’s Court of Queen’s Bench for Manitoba (Family Division). Decisions
The Federal Court issued a Notice to the Profession (link) regarding the publication of court decisions. The notice replaces the notice of June 2015 which had said that non-precedential decisions would not be published on the Federal Court website. The new notice, which came into force June 1, says that final decisions, if contested, along with interlocutory decisions considered by the Court to have precedential value, will be published on the website, and additional decisions published to CanLII. Alexandra Steele, a lawyer at ROBIC LLP practicing intellectual property law, has been appointed as a Prothonotary of the Federal Court, replacing Prothonotary Richard Morneau who has elected to retire May 15. Two new judges were appointed to the Federal Court today. Justice Elizabeth Walker was the Chairperson of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police External Review Committee and Justice John Norris was a sole practitioner based in Toronto.
