Appointments

Yesterday, Michael Battista, Founding Counsel at Battista Migration Law Group in Toronto, was appointed a Judge of the Federal Court and Catharine Moore, Senior General Counsel at the Department of Justice Canada in Ottawa, was appointed an associate judge of the Federal Court.  Appointments were also made to the courts of Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and the Tax Court.

Federal Court:

  • Michael Battista, Founding Counsel at Battista Migration Law Group in Toronto, was appointed a Judge of the Federal Court. Justice Battista replaces Justice E. Walker, who was elevated to the Federal Court of Appeal on January 26, 2024.
  • Catharine Moore, Senior General Counsel at the Department of Justice Canada in Ottawa, was appointed an associate judge of the Federal Court.

Ontario:

  • The Honourable Darla A. Wilson, a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in Toronto, was appointed a Judge of the Court of Appeal for Ontario in Toronto.
  • The Honourable Lene Madsen, a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario, Family Court, in Hamilton, was appointed a Judge of the Court of Appeal for Ontario in Toronto.
  • The Honourable Apple C. Newton-Smith, a Judge of the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto, was appointed a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in Toronto.
  • Carissima Mathen, Professor of Law at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, was appointed a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in Toronto.
  • Elizabeth McCarty, Counsel at the Office of the Children’s Lawyer of the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario in Toronto, was appointed a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario, Family Court, in Belleville.
  • Yvonne D. Fiamengo, Legal Counsel at the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto, was appointed a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario, Family Court, in Newmarket.

Quebec:

  • Catherine Dagenais, Partner at Dentons in Montréal, was appointed a Judge of the Superior Court of Quebec for the district of Montréal.

Saskatchewan:

  • The Honourable Michael Tomka, a Judge of the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan in Swift Current, was appointed a Judge of His Majesty’s Court of King’s Bench for Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.

Tax Court:

  • Sophie Matte, Executive Director and General Counsel at the Courts Administration Service in Ottawa, is appointed an associate judge of the Tax Court of Canada.
